| 2005 is a remarkable and very exceptional vintage born out of ideal summer weather. This was not the hottest summer on record but crucially there were long hours of sunshine and rain at the right times ensured a full and classic ripening, eventually resulting in a healthy and speedy harvest.
This is a year of naturally very low crops (resulting in incredible concentration of fruit) and wines of wonderful purity and stunning balance: the purity and vivacity of the sweeter wines is especially beguiling and of a quality rarely seen.
There are excellent wines at all levels, with very few QbA and Kabinett wines due to the concentration of this vintage, but it is the purity of expression of the late harvest wines that is perhaps the highlight of this vintage.
Carl von Schubert likens the vintage to 1921 and Donnhoff to 1990, whilst Wilhelm Haag and Manfred Prum think 2005 is utterly incomparable and ranks amongst the very greatest of German vintages.
The wines are intensely pure, concentrated, and ripe with great natural acidities, and also show fabulous Riesling fruit and strong terroir identities. These profound and concentrated wines may well close down after bottling for a year or two, but after that however they will almost certainly give great pleasure over a very long period of time.
Please do ask for further notes on wines below but all are of exceptional quality at their respective levels. We cannot re-iterate too much that this is one of the truly great German vintages
