| THE 2004 VINTAGE
With the top domaines, the white wines are really quite excellent on a par if not more concentrated than the great 2002 vintage - and have from the beginning shown very well. Those diligent producers that controlled their yields and who worked, as usual, well in their vineyards wines have wonderful wines of richness, depth, weight all balanced by fresh, mineral structure.
This is a year for red and white wines - when the terroirs are very expressive. There was very little, if any, chaptalisation of the white wines, and with the natural ripeness and acidity resulting in great finesse and balance. This is a great vintage to keep with the top premier and grand cru wines being quite backward although even the lesser wines will keep well.
This vintage’s success (for the red and white wines) was made by September’s dry and sunny weather. The growing season was a long one for Pinot Noir with the harvest finishing as late as mid-October, for example, in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin. July and August were very unsettled and cool but these months also gave this vintage its unique character of richness (from a dry and sunny September) yet with balancing freshness and vivacity (from the cooler and more unsettled July and August).
As well as keeping yields down throughout the growing season it was also very important to make strict selections of the best and ripest fruit in the vineyard and in the winery. The 2004 red wines show superb, pure and very expressive Pinot Noir red fruits aromas. On the palate they show richness, sweet, ripe tannins and are very classy and pure, also showing very fine terroir-driven characters. These wines have lovely phenolic richness and structure and will keep really well. As a foot note, a violent hailstorm hit Volnay, Pommard and Beaune on the 23rd of August causing substantial damage and considerably reducing volumes.
Many of the hail-effected vineyards of Pommard, Beaune and Volnay have produced remarkable wines with concentration and alcoholic degrees actually higher than 2003 because of the tiny yields!!

| Pricing
An awareness of the difficult market conditions and a good crop level has resulted in most growers reducing their prices to 2002 and 2001 levels, whilst those who have already been reasonable (and “under priced” with hardly any price increases) over the last few vintages, including 2003, have justifiably remained at the same price levels. Therefore the 2004 wines from the best producers are excellent, age-worthy wines, so considering their realistic approach to the prices, this is a vintage that should be considered seriously by all Burgundy lovers.
We have not included a great many individual tasting notes below as these tend towards repetition (!) but are pleased to advise and give further information where requested.
Older Vintages

| GHISLAINE BARTHOD, CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY |
| This is a great range of wines that so epitomizes the essence of Chambolle-Musigny and from a vintage which expresses so wonderfully the pure, floral, crunchy fruit, crystalline character of this great village. Ghislaine has really captured the vineyard character of each terroir so well in this vintage. A really fabulous and concentrated range of wines. The Bourgogne is, as usual, amazing for a generic wine while the Chambolle shows fine depth of ripe fruit and cool, red fruits flavours. The Chatelots is spicy, firm, with lovely strawberry Pinot fruit flavours: a lovely wine of great charm. This will keep well. The Cras has wonderful dense minerality, incredible verve and energy with a multi-layered palate and aristocratic tannins: this is of grand cru quality. |

| FRANCOIS LAMARCHE, VOSNE-ROMANEE |
| We have selected these three wines from this vintage as, for us, they show again the best of this domaine in this vintage. The Croix Rameau (really a part of Romanee St Vivant) is exquisite in its purity and finesse with vibrant, mineral, silky, fruit, complex and very deep and long. The Grands-Echezeaux is dense, deep, backward with exotic, multi-dimensional fruit so typical of this wine yet retains wonderful finesse and excellent balance with great complexity and harmony. The Grand Rue is really quite sublime with the terrific verve and the very pure, rich, exotic, multi-layered and unique fruit typical of this monopole: very complex with lacey, voluptuous, sweet tannins. These wines remain excellent value considering their origin and high-quality |
