2006 Burgundy
Notes
The Wines
|
A printer-friendly version of this page is available here (Microsoft Word)
The 2006 vintage following on from the great 2005 is going to suffer in simple comparisons. The white wines are certainly the equal of their 2005 counterparts and with some villages actually coming through even better (e.g. Chassagne-Montrachet). The white wines show richness and concentration balanced by fine acidity and mineral character. These wines will keep well and the wines can be purchased with confidence (please note when we discuss vintage character and quality we do so in reference only to the producers we work with and feature in this offer and we do not talk in general about other wines and producers from this vintage). There are some truly great wines which deserve their place in all serious cellars.
The red wines are a revelation. The producers we feature have excelled and made wines of remarkable quality. The 2006 vintage is not like 2005 but shows many different characteristics. The Cotes de Nuits wines are incredibly fine and pure with great expression of terroir and Pinot character. These are not “easy” wines but show considerable tannins albeit these are very ripe and silky and melted into the structure of the wines.
The crop levels are also in general lower and so the wines show that extra depth from lower production. There was also a violent late hailstorm at the end of June which hit the Cotes de Nuits and mainly Gevrey-Chambertin but also Morey and Chambolle. Up to 40% of the crop in certain Grand Cru vineyards, particularly the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, was lost due to this hailstorm. This has not affected the quality of our producers’ wines as picking was made in perfect weather towards the last week of September. In fact August was cool and it was a superb, clear, dry end of August and wonderful, dry month of September that enabled the fruit to reach ripeness and maturity.
The alcohol levels were suprising given the cool and unsettled August and this meant that little or no chaptalisation was necessary. The Cotes de Beaune produced, in general, more structured and tannic wines that will need cellaring but these are also quite superb (the red wines of Henri Boillot more famous for his extra-ordinary white wines - are quite sensational and are highlighted because of their standout potential, possibly greater than 2005).
It is reasonable, and repetitive!, to say that working with top producers usually results in superb wines in most decent vintages because of the care they take in the vineyards and cellars and because of the meticulous selections of fruit they make in their vineyards. This vintage is no exception and there are quite a large number of exceptional wines, red and white.
Please note as demand is so intense for certain wines and quantities so limited we do intend to allocate certain wines and we will look favourably upon those who take an interest in wines across the whole spectrum/ range rather than just only the top tier premier cru/grand cru wines. We also say this because the quality of the generic and villages wines that we are offering is very high.
We have not included a great many individual tasting notes below as these tend towards repetition (!) but are pleased to advise and give further information where requested.
OLDER VINTAGES: For those that are interested we still have some previous vintages available from the producers featured below. Please ask about these. We re-tasted a lot of 2004, 2003 and 2001(amongst other vintages) wines in Burgundy in early December and we do recommend them highly. We also have a very few 2005 wines remaining.
All wines are red unless otherwise stated as Blanc (White Burgundy). Prices in GB £ Per Dozen Bottles in bond delivered Edinburgh (unless otherwise stated).

The Cras is, as usual, the most backward, bit it is of Grand Cru level. The Bourgogne is one of the great bargain’s in Burgundy and the Chambolle Villages shows lovely open Pinot fruit with great class, The Chatelots is also terrific this vintage with great balance and finesse all red fruits and minerality with classic Chambolle char |

| CLOS DES LAMBRAYS, DOMAINE DES LAMBRAYS, MOREY ST. DENIS |
| A severe selection has resulted in a wine from tiny yields (around 25 hl/ha). This estate is now effectively bio-dynamic and the Grand Vin Rouge Clos des Lambrays is wonderfully pure, fine and concentrated. The tannins are very ripe and this wine has an amazing, complex bouquet of wild flowers, red fruits, cherries and herbs. Behind all this fruit there is a lovely structure which will enable the wine to keep extremely well. A great wine. The domaine Puligny wines are from very old vines, low yields and are of Grand Cru stature. They are produced in very small quantities and they remain some the best white Burgundies one could hope to find. The Folatieres is a tad more forward and rounder than the Caillerets but both show great balance and intense concentration and minerality. |

| JACQUES-FREDERIC MUGNIER, CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY |
| Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Marechale (Monopole) |
|
|
336.00 |
| This monopole vineyard was leased to Faiveley for 50 years and came back to the Mugnier family for the 2004 vintage, which was a huge success. Although this vineyard is in the south of Nuits (which are the more tannic, backward terroirs) Mugnier’s vision of Nuits through a Chambolle lens is really apparent in this supremely elegant and vivid wine. This shows a deep colour and full, floral, red-cherries on the nose, with hints of red fruits with great energy and freshness. This is incredibly refined with great purity, elegance and with the structured finish of Nuits giving the wine a great balance. A fantastic wine which may not be classic southern Nuits but is just a delight |
|
|
| JEAN CHAUVENET, NUITS ST. GEORGES |
| A fabulous range of wines from Christophe Drag at Domaine Chauvenet. These wines continue to impress and are vastly under-rated. Glorious ripe fruit and impeccable balance. These are wines that age superbly well. The 2006 vintage is a great success in Nuits St Georges with the extra ripeness producing wines with more refined and silky tannins yet still with great transparency of the terroirs |

| MICHEL LAFARGE, VOLNAY |
| A great range of wines from one of the greatest estate’s in Burgundy. These wines will need extended cellaring. The Beaune Aigrots (white and red) are new vineyard purchases by Lafarge and 2006 is the second vintage of these wines and very fine they are too! The Beaune Aigrots Blanc is particularly fine and very mineral with superb concentration. The Volnay Mitans has been vinified separately for the second time as they have purchased more vines in this cru to supplement their existing tiny holding |

| DOMAINE HENRI BOILLOT PERE ET FILS, VOLNAY |
| Henri Boillot has again produced some of greatest white and red wines of the vintage. These all have superb phenolics and the balance and concentration to keep very well indeed. The village white wines could be approached young but will keep well and at the premier and grand cru level they will certainly need more cellaring. These are possibly the finest white wines of the vintage. The red wines (from tiny yields) are also magnificent and represent great value. These red wines now rank alongside with the best from Burgundy and are a complete revelation in this vintage (the red wines are from yields of around 20 hl/ha). |

| FOLLIN-ARBELET, ALOXE-CORTON |
| This domaine is producing some of the finest wines in the Cote d’Or and deserves serious attention. The 2006 wines are possibly greater than 2005 and this is one of the best range of wines produced in 2006. These are wines of stunning finesse. 2006 could in fact be even greater for Follin than 2005 as he picked very late and made wines of great concentration and intensity. |
Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru les Vercots
