Malgas, Western Cape
The Story
Sijnn was born in 2003/2004 when the David and Rita Trafford of Stellenbosch planted first the vines in the region. The Traffords had discovered the land while on holiday in Malgas in 2000. The unique soil and landscape reminded them of Chateauneuf du Pape & Douro, and they were immediately intrigued. A purchase agreement and more than 200 soil profiles later, the initial 12 hectares of vines were soon planted. The word ‘sijnn’ is derived from the local Khoisan dialect word for riverbank. The winery, designed by architect David in 2012, is built of local stone and overlooks the river, vineyards and natural renosterveld, the garrigue of South Africa. Fast forward to now, they have 7 other ’neighbour’ vineyards, and Malgas is now an official viticultural region.
