Eight years of working across a range of Edinburgh restaurants including The Kitchin and The Palmerston, and the completion of his self-funded WSET Level 4 Diploma, brought Murray to the point where he felt ready to transition into a wine role off the service floor.

Murray credits his mother’s own sales career in leading him towards this role; growing up watching her example helped him to believe may have a knack for communicating his vinous interests to others.

Ben remains staunchly European to this day, and not only his palate! Favourite wines tend to be a creamy serious Chardonnay, anything from Saumaize-Michelin or on special occasions Henri Boillot. Another favourite is Pichler-Krutzler Pinot Blanc. Reds are Italian on the whole: anything from Tuscany, like Sanguineto’s Rosso, and northwards.

Summer holidays always include a winery visit or two. Discovering the steepness of Stella di Campalto’s Montalcino vineyards, the age of Tritium’s cellars in Rioja, and discussing the merits of coalition governance with Giampaolo Tabarrini are three particular highlights to date.
